Thursday, February 25th -In Class and Homework

We spent the period reviewing for tomorrow's quiz, going over the different biotechnology lab procedures (the focus of the quiz). We used the Campbell site and some other animations to aid in the review. The homework is to study for the quiz.

Tuesday, February 23rd 2010 - In Class and Homework

We reinforced what we learned over the past few days by using the computers and viewing animations of the lab techniques related to biotechnology. The links are at the right. We also introduced a new technique - microarray assay. Objectives for chapter 20 and a note page for the microarray method were handed out. The homework is to read up through page 402.

Monday, February 22nd - In class and homework

The students who prepared for the same techniques to teach were grouped together and double checked their information. Each student then picked up the 4 sheets (all different colors) for the techniques to be taught to them. The students were then put into groups of 3 or 4 and taught their specific technique to the other students. The homework is to read pages 384 - 394 (20.1 and 20.2)

Friday, February 19th 2010 In class and Homework

Each student was assigned 2 research methods related to gene technology. After reading the 1st page of the chapter 20, the remainder of the period was spent preparing to teach the specifics of each technique. This should be finished for homework. Also, the most recent test was handed back and the test correction procedure was explained.

Thursday, February 18th -In Class and Homework

We spent the period going over the 3 part formative assessment for chapter 19 (activity quiz, self quiz and chapter quiz). We used a powerpoint to help show visuals to answer questions.Te students were informed the scores for the chapter 17 & 18 tests were online and that students could come in before school or during office hours to correct wrong answers (with support) to receive 1/2 credit back. The home work is to review chapter 19 material and to make sure to have a textbook in class tomorrow.

Wednesday , February 17th 2010 - In Class and Homework

We used the computers to take a 3 part formative assessment - 52 questions total. After the scores were recorded by the instructor, the remainder of the period was spent (re)reading the remainder of the chapter and asking questions. The homework is to review chapter 19 (particularly sections 19.2, 3 and 4).

Monday 2/08/10 - In Class and Homework

Time was given in class to use the computers to help continue learning about the material in 19.2 (Using the Campbell web site animations as a tool). The last 15 minutes or so was spent working in small groups preparing to teach the material to 2 or 3 other students tomorrow. The homework is to complete your preparation.

Friday, February 5th 2010 - In class and Homework

We received a 5 page handout (as well as the Chapter 19 objectives) dealing with Sections 19.1 and 19.2. 19.2 has some challenging material so we are breaking it down in a way to help teach each other, (taking notes, etc.). The homework is to continue to work on teaching preparation.

Thursday, February 4th -In Class and Homework

We began the period by reading the 1st 2 and 1/2 pages of section 19.2 - focusing in on the regulation of genes by affecting chromatin structure. We then watched a clip from "NOVA Science Now" dealing with a Hot Topic - Epigenetics. After a brief discussion, we finished class beginning the reading of the Jan 18th, 2010 Time Magazine cover story - "Why your DNA isn't your destiny" . The homework is to finish reading this article as well as the other 2 page handout dealing with Epigenetics.

Today was a study day for tomorrow's ch 17 and 18 test. Resources included the answers to yesterday's practice questions (on the overhead), computers available to access the Campbell site including practice quizzes, and the instructor available to answer questions. Monday 2/01/10 - In Class and Homework

The 1st part of class was spent using two animations to help explain the concept of an operon (specifically an inducible operon (lac) and a repressible operon (trp). The 2nd 1/2 of the period was spent taking the practice test at the end of ech chapter study guide (17 and 18). The answers to each are posted above.

Friday, January 29th 2010 - In class and Homework

We spent the 1st half of the period continuing to work on chapter 18 objective notes and study guide interactive questions. The last 1/2 was spent discussing 18.3 using some powerpoint slides - particularly with respect to methods of genetic variability in prokaryotes. It was decided the Test covering the material in chapters 17 and 18 would be put off until Wednesday. The homework is to finish up Chapter 18 work.
