Thursday, January 28th -In Class and Homework
We went over the virus concept map and discussed the lytic and lysogenic cycles. We then used the computers to view the Campbell activity 18.4 (lac operon) while answering the questions handed out yesterday. The homework is as follows: Read 18.3, complete the notes for objectives 13-18 and complete interactive questions 18.4 and 18.5. There will be a 40 point assessment covering the material from Chapters 17 and 18 next Tuesday.

Wednesday January 27th, 2010 - In Class and Homework
We used the computers today to view and write about 2 simulations - about a retrovirus and a prokaryotic gene control process called an operon. The web site for the former is to the right and for the latter is on the Campbell site (18.4 activity). The homework is to continue the note pages (from yesterday) for objectives 8 through 12 as you are reading pages 342 - 346.

Tuesday, January 26th - In class and Homework
We wrapped up chapter 17 by looking at 2 mutation animations (showing frameshift and nonsense mutations). We then began work on chapter 18 with the objectives and the chapter 18 study guide. We spent the remainder of the period reading the beginning of chapter 18 and taking notes about the objectives. By tomorrow we should have the following completed: Reading pages 334 -342, notes for objectives 1 -7 and interactive q's 18.1 - 8.3
Monday 1/25/10 - In Class and Homework
We reviewed the process of protein synthesis by going through the campbell animations (overview, transcription, mRNA processing and translation). We also went through many of the study guide interactive questions (Chapter 17). We then passed back the chapter 15 & 16 quiz and explained there will be a requiz possibility, after some additional practice (and mastery). The homework is to review chapter 17 - connecting to the objectives.

Friday, January 22nd 2010 - In class and Homework
We wrapped up our protein synthesis Lab today (lab sheets were turned in). The homework is to read the remainder of chapter 17 (pages 327 - 331) and to complete the remaining interactive q's from the study guide
Thursday, January 21st -In Class and Homework
we began our protein synthesis lab (this is a "2 in 1" lab - both an analogy {sentence} lab and a simulation {building a polypeptide}). We used props simulating a DNA strand, a mRNA strand, tRNAs, a ribosome and amino acids. The homework is to review sections 17.2 - 17.4.

Wednesday January 20th, 2010 - In Class and Homework
(No school for students Monday and Tuesday). We used the computers in class to observe and write notes about animations dealing with protein synthesis (specifically - transcription and translation). Handouts included a chapter 17 objectives sheet, a note sheet to describe the animations and a chapter 17 study guide. The homework is to read sections 17.3 and 17.4 and to complete the study guide questions 17.1 - 17.4

Friday, January 15th 2010
We took a quiz (30 multiple choice questions) over chapters 15 ad 16. If finished before the end of class, we could begin working on the homework - reading the 1st 2 sections of Chapter 17 (pages 309 -317)

Thursday, January 14th -In Class and Homework
We spent the period reviewing for tomorrow's quiz (Chapters 15 and 16). This included taking the "test your knowledge" formative assessment for chapters 15 and 16, (and then checking the answers). We also went over any questions from last night's homework. The homework is to prepare for tomorrow's quiz.
Wednesday January 13th, 2010 - In Class and Homework
We viewed 3 animations concerning DNA replication (including the Meselson Stahl experiment). The homework is to complete the activities quiz for chapter 16 (From our book site). We will have a 30 question quiz Friday - covering chapters 15 and 16.

Tuesday, January 12th - In class and Homework
We built a 12 base pair segment of DNA in class today, working primarily by ourselves, then with a partner, then in groups of 4. We emphasized the 3 dimensional nature of dna and what it allows the molecule to do (preserve the information, etc.). If any time remains, we started reading 16.2. The homework is to complete the reading of 16.2 as well as answer the study guide interactive q's 16.3 to 16.5. There will be a 30 point quiz on Friday, covering chapters 15 and 16.
Monday, January 11th 2010 - In class and Homework
We began class by scanning all the questions assigned last thursday (primarily the chapter 15 activities quiz and chapter quiz - both formative assessments). Students were able to ask about any questions; as well as those from the chapter 15 study guide. Two handouts were then given - the chapter 16 study guide and the chapter 16 expectations. The remainder of the period was spent reading section 16.1. The homework was to finish reading 16.1 and complete the study guide interactive questions 16.1 and 16.2.

Thursday, January 7th -In Class and Homework
We used the computers today - we completed the interactive activities for chapter 15, having to do with linked genes, crossing over, sex linkage and polyploidy. We then took the pretest and the activities test (as formative assessments). The homework is to take the Chapter test (as an additional formative assessment). We will test chapters 15 and 16 together, most likely in approx 10 days.

Wednesday January 6th, 2010 - In Class and Homework
We completed the data gathering for our Gene Linkage Lab - we used the class data as well as our individual data to compute map units. The homework is to finish the lab computations and questions. Also, read pages 285 - 290 and complete Interactive questions 15.6 - 15.8
Tuesday, January 5th - In class and Homework
We completed the 1st half (approx.) of our gene linkage lab. The homework is to read section 15.3 and the complete the interactive question 15.5 on the study guide. We will continue the lab tomorrow

Monday, January 4th 2010 - In class and Homework
Welcome back! We began Chapter 15 today - we had 3 handouts - objectives, a gene linkage lab and a study guide for chapter 15. We had silent reading for the 1st 25 - 30 minutes (sections 15.1 and the 1st part of 15.2). We spent the last 15 - 20 minutes assembling a pair of homologous chromosomes using beads. These will be used in the gene linkage lab. The homework is to finish reading 15.2 and to answer the 1st 4 interactive q's from the study guide.
